FARM KIDS MINI FARMERS PROGRAM – BIRDS ON A FARM: PEST, PET OR FOOD?

9am – 3pm | $130 | ages 5 to 15 yrs.

The kids become mini farmers and after a detailed tour get set to work doing farm chores. We collect eggs, restock our pet chickens bedding, ensure they have fresh water and clean out the coup. We work on our dedicated Farm Kids garden plot and tend to our onsite worm Subpod. If the opportunity arises, we assist the farmers with their chores. They forage, cook, make natural products, create and see where their food comes from as well as experience countless opportunities to learn about teamwork, community, and ethical farming practices.

Discussion

·      On the Farm tour today we count and name the birds we see on the farm and discuss their importance to the Ecology of the Farm and the planet.

·      How do birds benefit the other farm animals?

·      How do birds spread seeds?

·      What is healthy food for a bird? What is not?

·      What birds are farmed for their meat? Feathers?

·      Ethical farming and animal welfare.

·      What types of birds?

Activities

·      Children paint their own terracotta bird bath to take home to encourage birds to the garden.

·      We build(or rebuild) scare crows to scare away those birds we don’t want eating our crops and then place the scarecrow in the fields.
