Ye Olde Stone School

Summer Stone Building Course at The Farm

Ye Olde Stone School returns to The Farm this summer, offering a hands-on stone building course grounded in traditional methods, historic detail and practical skill.

This course is designed for anyone drawn to working with stone — from builders and designers to gardeners, farmers and creatives — who want to learn the logic, craft and rhythm behind traditional masonry.

What You’ll Learn

  • Stone splitting, drafting, squaring, and bed and face dressing

  • How to set out and build using traditional hand-hewn techniques

  • The aesthetics, theory and logic behind heritage stonework

  • Hands-on experience that builds both practical skills and creative thinking

Ye Olde Stone School was founded to pass on traditional stone hand crafts, including identifying and splitting stone safely, shaping with proportion and gauging, and building stone into walls in ways that engage the senses and please the eye.

Set in the open paddocks of The Farm in Ewingsdale, Byron Bay, students take part in the ongoing construction of a 19th-century-style cottage. The skills taught are practical, physical and deeply connected to the earthiness of pioneer farming and traditional building.
